For legal work

Law is the second domain we are building toward, and in one respect it is stricter than finance: the work product is only as good as its provenance. A brief that cannot say what it rests on, who instructed it, and what a professional actually reviewed is not a cheaper brief. It is a liability.

The problem, stated plainly

AI drafting tools are already in legal practice, and the profession's obligations have not moved: the lawyer remains answerable for the filing, the advice, the disclosure. The failures making headlines, the invented citations, the unreviewed passages, the provenance nobody can reconstruct, are not failures of model quality. They are failures of accountability plumbing: nothing in the pipeline records what the machine did, what sources it drew on, and what the professional actually examined before signing.

What the Topos doctrine means in a legal setting

The same laws that govern our engineering substrate translate directly. Every piece of work begins as a registered instruction in plain language: who asked for what, on whose matter. The machine's contributions are recorded as facts it signs; the professional's approvals are policy acts only a named person can sign. Claims must carry their evidence, a source that exists, a citation that resolves, or they are refused rather than filed. And the whole history lands in an append-only record, so that months later the firm can show precisely what was machine-drafted, what was human-reviewed, and in which order. The laws themselves are published here.

Where this stands

Earlier than finance. Our reporting discipline is in production; the legal application is being shaped in months-scale work with practitioners rather than launched as a product. We build domain by domain, deliberately. The substrate is general, but each profession's obligations deserve more respect than a settings page. If you run legal work where provenance is becoming the question, in regulatory change management, filings, or event-driven compliance, we would like to compare notes.
